Learning To Draw By The Sea

The ocean is an amazing thing.   Did you know water covers over 70% of the earth’s surface?  Scientists claim they have only explored 5% of the ocean so far.  That leaves a whole lot of mystery about this beautiful habitat that is so vital to the world in so many ways.  I would encourage everyone to visit the ocean at least once if they get the opportunity. Your senses will be overwhelmed and rejuvenated by the experience.

It is amazing to listening to the roar of the waves, get your feet wet or go for a swim, wait and watch for fish or dolphins to breach the surface, to observe birds swooping down to catch a fish, or sighting an occasional fishing boat out to sea.  The ocean is always changing and you could spend hours watching it.

Our family loves to visit the ocean!  We are usually blessed to take a day drive and visit the sea a couple of times a year.  Sometimes we drive several hours just to get out and walk the beach and splash in the waves for two hours and then get back in the vehicle and drive several more hours back home. Depending on which beach we visit, it takes us about 4 hours to get to the closest one.  It is a long ways to drive, but it is free to use the public beaches. If we pack a cooler with food and water, then the only cost involved is the fuel to drive there.  With a large family, getting to do something fun for FREE is a big deal.

On a few occasions, we have been blessed with the opportunity to spend the night instead of driving there and back all in one day.  Those overnight experiences by the sea have been exceptional.  It is hard to describe the amazing way you feel when you wake up to the ocean, and get up with the sun rise, spend the day in the salty air, then get to observe the sunset, and listen to the waves in the dark of night as the stars twinkle overhead.  It is wonderful!

Learning To Draw By The Sea.

We recently had the opportunity to stay overnight on a visit to the ocean. We spent the morning and evening playing on the beach, but in the heat of the day, we needed something else to do to avoid getting a serious sunburn.   We did not bring electronic games or computers that are part of our normal homeschooling day.  Instead, we played board games like chess, put together fun puzzles, and spent part of our time learning to draw with the art kits we recently made.

It was so nice to have our portable DIY Art Kits.  Be sure to check the story with information on how to make one for your family.

The kits were small enough to go just about anywhere with us, yet they were big enough to hold just about everything we needed.

For some reason that I can’t remember, I didn’t get pictures of the kids drawing.  I guess I must have been so excited about the view, and the opportunity to sit there and draw, that I failed to get up and take pictures of what the others were making too.

For this project, I used the watercolor pencils.  I had hoped to make a project with paints too, but I didn’t have time to accomplish both on this trip.  My older son chose to use charcoal pencils from his kit, and the younger kids used crayons.  I pulled out a small table onto the porch to hold my drawing pad and pencils.

It was a bit windy on this day.  I separated the pencils colors that I wanted to use from the case holding the pencils.  I set them beside my drawing pad, however the wind kept blowing them off and I was constantly having to get up and down to catch a pencil before it rolled off the porch.  I realized the next time I take this art kit on a trip, I will need to bring something better to hold the colors I am using.  Perhaps something as simple as a rubber band or a small tray with sides would have solved my problem.

From the porch where I sat, I could see a long ways in the distance across the ocean and the beach up and down the coast.  To the front of me was ocean as far as I could see, and to the left was a small fishing vessel that soon disappeared while I was drawing.  I tried to capture both in my drawing.  The waves were the most difficult part to draw because they kept moving. Drawing the ocean wasn’t easy because even though it appears the same, in reality each and every moment it keeps changing.

Learning to draw by the sea was fun and it is an experience our family will never forget.

“And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.”  Genesis 1:10

DIY Art Kits

Here is a fun and affordable DIY Art Kit for travel, hiking, art classes, or to use around the house.

We have two birthdays coming up and both birthday kids have requested a set of Thin Stix paints for their birthdays.  We recently reviewed these fun tempera art sticks and the kids had a lot of fun.   Be sure to read about our experience reviewing Thin Stix.

So in addition to adding these to our art supplies at home for art classes and crafts we make, I have also ordered additional sets for both birthday kids.  I ordered the Neon Colors pack for my daughter and the Creative Colors pack for my son.  I am hoping they arrive in time to add into their art kits I made for their birthdays.

These Thin Stix tempera paints are “take anywhere” and “mess free” so they are perfect to take on the go in the car, or to a game, to sit outside and paint a scene from nature, or if they want they can even color in bed.

DIY Art Kits are portable, can be easily carried, and are light weight so the kids, or mom (I want to make a kit for me too) can sit anywhere and have the basic art supplies they need to create something beautiful.

Watch this short video about using Thin Stix tempera paint sticks from The Pencil Grip, Inc. to see why these are such a great addtion to your art kits.

DIY Art Kits:

For these kits, I used a re-purposed container. I saved a see through zippered plastic pouch from a bed sheet set. This container is the perfect holder for their kits, they can see everything in it at a glance, and they will fit nicely in a shoulder bag or backpack.

DIY Art Kits we made include: Thin Stix tempera paints, Mixed Media Sketch Paint Pad, Charcoal Pencils, Graphite Pencils, Colored Pencils, Pencil Sharpener, Eraser, Ruler, Gel Pens, and a small Watercolor Kit, various Paint Brushes (not pictured) and a sponge.

You can add crayons and oil pastels, a protractor, origami papers, colored tape, glue, various colored tissue papers, and and exacto knife if desired to this kit still and a fold-able easel if desired.

These costs will vary in making these kits.  Two of the kits I made cost about Art Kits $30 +/- and a larger kit I made for my older son that included more Thin Stix colors cost about $40 to include everything.

Some of the individual costs of items to put this together for example included:  Sketch Pad $8, Colored Pencils $8, Thin Stix 6pk of Neon Colors $7 and the other kit included Thin Stix 24pk of Creative Colors.  Some of the other items came from the Dollar Store and the outer case was repurposed for free.

The outer case is a zippered plastic cover that came on a couple of sheet sets we purchased a while back and I saved the covers thinking I might use them some day.  Sure enough, they are great for holding these art supplies.   Some items will cost a little more if you purchase them online from e-bay or a lot more if purchased from an art supply store.  It is up to you what you include, and the ages and needs of your kids, so costs will vary.

The paint brushes for the DIY Art Kit are back-ordered, and I am hopeful they will arrive in time for their birthdays. I wanted to keep these kits mess free and easy to use. Thin Stix are wonderful for keeping them mess free, but sometimes you want to use watercolors too. These brushes will help watercolor paints to be less messy because they hold water in the handle of the paint brush. For the watercolor brushes all you do is squeeze the brush then dab the brush onto the dry watercolor and use it.   Then to clean it just squeeze the brush again so water reaches the brush and wipe off on the sponge before you get your next color.

I think my kids will really enjoy using these homemade portable DIY Art Kits. I am thankful for the opportunity to try out the Thin Stix 6k Classic Colors tempera paints and we are excited to include them in our portable travel kits and our art supplies in our home.Stay tuned for pictures of other projects we make with our Thin Stix! They are a lot of fun, mess free, and so easy to use!

I found a cute method for downsizing all of this into one small bag that is taped (using cute paterned duck tape) to the art pad so you can hold all of this on your lap without loosing anything.  I don’t have my kit finished yet. But check out this video by Coloring Pages Bliss so you can see how to attach your zippered pouch of supplies right to your art pad and an extremely light weight easy access portable art kit.

I made two of these kits for birthdays we are celebrating next month.  I liked them so much that I made one for myself too.  And now the other four kids have requested them too.  So that is a future project.

Building Beds

Well the big boys have outgrown everything, including their beds.

They have asked for loft beds.  We searched everywhere for the right beds and couldn’t find an affordable option that could hold their “near adult” size.

So we set out to design and build our own loft beds custom made to fit each one.

Here are a few pictures of Daddy teaching the boys the beginning steps in how to build their beds.

Sanding boards smooth is a lot of work.  It took more time to sand than most of the other steps.

The boys are learning hands on carpentry skills from a master carpenter. These lessons will last a lifetime.

Be sure to check out the next story about DIY Loft Beds.

Spring!

Oh can it really be true? I sure hope it is! What a difference a few days make. Just a week ago, we were playing games indoors, and if we went outside we had to be bundled head to toe in our heaviest winter gear.

IMG_5429 IMG_5422

But it was just too cold to stay out and play for long, and most of our free time was spent doing this:

IMG_5380IMG_5361

and this:

IMG_4541IMG_5084

and building this:

and more of this:

IMG_4325IMG_5408

Now this week the weather has improved and we can go outside with light jackets!  No more heavy coats!  We can enjoy the sunshine.  Spring has begun even though it’s official day isn’t until next week.   It is still a little chilly if the wind is blowing, but it is so beautiful and I love that there is more color than just white!

Even the chickens are happy!  They are scratching around in the yard looking for fresh sprouted grass and bugs.  Happy chickens makes me happy!

Snow But Hoping For Spring Soon

Hoping for spring to come soon!  Even though the snow is pretty, I am ready for a change.  I need some warm sunny days.

Here are some beautiful snowy pictures around the homestead from Saturday, March 1st.   I came outside to snap a few pictures, hoping to say goodbye to winter.

IMG_5412

Pretty, yes!  Practical, no!  I am so over winter.  The driveway is a solid sheet of ice.  My van has been in the same spot in the drive way almost all winter. My husband has a truck and can get in and out just fine for work, and can take several kids on daddy dates to go get groceries and supplies, but my van is the only vehicle we have big enough to take us all out at the same time, and it is not capable of making it down or up the driveway when it is covered in ice.  Oh it has been a long winter!

IMG_5413

We spend our days doing schoolwork, then playing games indoors, reading, baking, building with Legos, making crafts, bundling up in serious winter gear to play in the snow outdoors, etc. But the kids long to play in the grass again without having to wear their heavy winter gear.

IMG_5414

I can’t wait until the snow is gone and the kids can ride bikes and play in the green grass again.

IMG_5417

I love how the pine trees embrace the snow.  I felt this way back in December.  But it is March and I am over it now, lol.

IMG_5415

The older boys bundled up to build a snow fort and throw snow balls this afternoon.  “Please don’t throw one at me, I have a camera!”

IMG_5422

Serious construction going on here Mom!  This one absolutely loves the snow.  He could live in it year around I think.  Alaska or even Antartica wouldn’t bother him a bit.  He could live in any weather anywhere as long as he got to build something I think.  He loves to stay busy building.  And if he can’t go out, if it is too cold or too hot, or pouring down rain, then he builds with his legos and Lincoln logs too.  He tells me all the time he wants to be a builder like his daddy when he grows up.

IMG_5430

Building his wall for his snow fort.

IMG_5429

The kitties followed me everywhere I went.

IMG_5431

They stayed on the trail, but they were all about the little walk around.

IMG_5434

There is five of them: George, Boots, Lion, Precious, Camo, plus their mom: Tiger, and they follow us everywhere.  They are as big as their mom now, but we still call them kittens.  They still act like kittens too.  They are such a joy to our family.  We truly love these precious cats.

IMG_5440

Here is a picture of the chicken coop, outdoor rabbit hutch, and the old barn.

IMG_5449

The goats choose to stay in the barn most of the winter eating their hay. They go outside a little when the sun comes out from behind the clouds, or they stand in the doorway, but they agree with me about winter and I think they are saying “we are tired of the snow already and want some sunshine please!”

IMG_5427

Even the chickens won’t walk in the snow.  All winter they venture out of their house about two feet and then turn around and go back in. They say “no more snow, we wont go, no more snow”, ha, ha!

IMG_5436

This is Boots and he is hanging out in the barn today.  He loves to explore!

IMG_5448

We had to move the rabbits inside as it is too cold here to leave them outside in the winter.

IMG_5446

We were given these wonderful rabbit cages and feeders just after the snows began this winter by a sweet elderly couple who no longer needed them. My husband hung them in the barn.  It reminds me of my grandma’s rabbitree . She had rows and rows of these hanging in her barn.

IMG_5441

The old farmhouse.  Indiana winter’s are cold, snowy, and everything stays frozen. I am thankful for this old farmhouse that shelters my family. Some youngins stepped onto the porch to ask me what I was doing in the snow, lol! I told them “I am saying goodbye to winter and praying for spring!”

Week 8 Update of the 90 Day Challenge

Can it be that I am already in my 8th week of this get healthy challenge? I am just amazed at how fast the time is passing. I am so glad I chose to focus on health and wellness at the start of this year. It truly has been a learning journey that has blessed me and my family in many ways already. I have worked and done extensive research in health and wellness for over 25+ years, worked as a medical social worker and social service director, and also owned a health foods store in Indiana, and a healthy foods coop in North Carolina.  I closed the store when we moved to NC, and closed the coop two years ago when we moved back to Indiana, and I have truly missed the variety of natural healthy people that I crossed paths with in both of these.

Someday when my kids are older, I hope to go back to school and finish graduate school in Naturopathic Health Care and open a new healthy foods store again.  I love working with a wide variety of health care providers that are interested in natural health care: nutritionists, midwives, massage therapists, physical and occupational therapists, chiropractors, herbalists, and more.  Natural health care is very exciting to me, and I love to keep learning about our amazing bodies and all the wonderful natural ways we can care for them. I also love to help others and share this knowledge with them too.

Three months ago, in December, I became a Wellness Consultant with doTerra Essential Oil company.  doTerra has furthered me along in my health and wellnesss journey this year, including helping my family overcome winter illnesses, improved skin integrity of my hands and feet, and assisting me in weight loss and healing my adrenal and thyroid glands. Check out my Week 6 Update for more information about how supplements are helping me.

Included with my doTerra enrollment kit was my own website storefront to sell products, access to doTerra’s online university to study and complete my Wellness Consultant Certificate, a beautiful wooden box containing several essential oils, and several healthy natural living products.  I completed my studies at the doTerra Online University and earned my certificate. This training and the kit with all of this wonderful knowledge and great products have truly been a life changing tool for wellness in our home this winter.

Natural Solutions Enrollment Kit

Here are some of the doTerra products that I have been using during this 90 Day Challenge to boost my family’s health and wellness:

On Guard Toothpaste
My husband and I both love this. It whitens your teeth naturally as it cleans them. It also provides antibacterial support for your teeth and gums and your over all immune system. It tastes wonderful and I love to kiss my husband after using this toothpaste!

toothpaste

On Guard Beadlets
These are tiny soft gel beads that we take internally to fight off infections. If we feel like our immune system is under attack, we quickly take one a couple of time and it helps to fight it off. The beadlets contain wild orange, clove, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary in tiny vegetable beadlets that melt in the mouth quickly to freshen breath and support the immune system. We often just swallow them and let them dissolve further down in our digestive system when we feel we are fighting an illness too. There is also a larger soft gel available that has On Guard plus three additional immune boosting oils designed for that purpose too.

This winter, in early January, our family was hit by the resperatory flu.  But it came and it went!  When we began having symptoms, I gave everyone one in the family a beadlet, in addition to the other supplements we take when fighting an illness (elderberry extract, echinacia goldenseal extract, three B’s, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A from fish oil) and staying hydrated, and daddy and I took the beadlets twice a day for two days.   I also diffused On Guard essential oil blend around the clock.  Several of our friends battled this flu illness for weeks, including some having to go to hospital and lots of medications.  One friend is a nurse and she was even vaccinated, but she still got the flu real bad.  Some of her coworkers were hospitalized up to 10 days.   But not our family!  Though the illness came on strong, with high fever, aches and pains, it quickly dissipated once our fevers were over.  We had no further effects! No chest congestion, no further sickness.  Praise the Lord!

On Gurad Beadlets

On Guard Hand Soap
Safe non-toxic natural alternative to synthetic anti bacterial soaps. It smells wonderful!  I feel so good knowing that my kids are using a natural cleansing product on their little bodies.

On Guard Soap

Life Long Vitality Pack
This is a pack of three super food supplements to support the body’s nutritional and immune system needs.   Included is a whole food formula of vitamins and minerals (MicroPLEX VMz), cellular vitality complex (Alpha CRS+), and an omega oil complex (xEO MEGA).  Each of these formulas is designed to promote health in the body functions and includes botanical extracts and essential oils.

These are some of the best quality supplements I have ever seen in my 25+ years of learning about health and wellness.  I am going to post a more in-depth story focussing on these wonderful supplements. They are re-building something in my body that is allowing my heals on my feet to re-grow new skin and replace the rough skin.  My finger nails are growing stronger and I am feeling more energetic using these supplements.

Life Long Vitality Pack by doTerra

TerraZyme
This multi-enzyme blend supports healthy biochemical functions including healthy digestion of food nutrients and cellular metabolism of nutrients to energy. TerraZyme includes a variety of whole-food enzymes that help with digestion of proteins, fats, complex carbohydrates, sugars and fiber.

As a side note, TerraZyme also help ward off a stomach illness.  When a nasty stomach bug hit the whole family in February, I was cheif nurse made. The family illness caught me off guard, and I was cleaning up vomiting and diareah on the hour for several days, ehausted, and praying I wouldn’t catch it too.   When I got my wits about me, I remembered that taking an enzyme blend could help reduce the effects.  I started to feel the nausia too, so I took TerraZyme and I could feel it stop the nausia within a half hour of taking it, and I never threw up as everyone else in the house did.  TerraZyme helped the stomach virus pass on through to the bowels and be eliminated.  I still got a milder case of diareah lasting about one day, and several others had the diareah for several days, but the illness was greatly shortened for me.  I am 100% convinced the enzymes prevented me from going through the vomitting and days of diareah that those who got the illness before me went through.

TerraZyme

Deep Blue Rub and Deep Blue Rollon
This lotion style rub and the rollon is for soothing sore muscles and joints. It feels like cold and hot at the same time. My skin tingles when I apply it and my muscles relax.  My husband loves the way it relaxes his tense muscles after a stressful day at work. He also had a sore lower back after lifting something heavy, and we rubbed Deep Blue on him and he was able to go to sleep and rest allowing his back to repair itself, and was good as new the next day.

Deep Blue Rub                      Deep Blue Rollon

Diffuser
I love using my diffuser to diffuse any and all essential oils into the air. This technology is one of the most amazing little secrets of a healthy home. I remember as a child learning about pioneers burning herbs and sulfur to cleanse the air in the home when there was a sickness. That is essentially what a diffuser does and more. It sends the oils into the air to cleanse it. It also helps to manage moods and behaviors too. Diffusing oils is amazing.

Diffuse doTerra Oils

Essential Oils
doTerra has a large number of Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils.  Fruits, Vegetables, Herbs and Spices are Natures Medicine Cabinet.  doTerra has captured these healing properties of plants in their essential oils.

OilSingles

I have been studying and learning how to use essential oils to clean the house, create amazing massage oils and relaxing baths, as well as treat any and every illness that has come our way this winter. Encounter the respiratory flu? no problem! Encounter the stomach flu? no problem! Encounter a head ache? no problem! Encounter an ear ache? no problem! Encounter a sinus infection? no problem!

I have also learned to use the oils for emotional well-being of the family too.  I can mix up my own oil combination blends, or use the wonderful blends doTerra already has put together for me.  They have blends for everything: mood, aches and pains, breathing, balance, cleaning and purifying, digestion, headaches, calming, relaxing, first aid, skin care, anti-aging, weight loss, bug repellant, and more.

OilBlends

Even as far as I have come in learning in my healthy living journey, I am just getting started!  Learning about healthy living is a life long journey.  I have many more doTerra products on my wish list to further our healthy living journey.  I am truly impressed with their quality. You can view their product catalog online for free and put together your own wish list. I will share more about the products I am using in upcoming stories too.

Are you interested in health and wellness? Would you like to use doTerra products in your home? Drop me a note and let me know.

Be blessed!

Winter On The Homestead

Winter is definitely a time of slowing down on the homestead. It is just too cold to try to work on projects without a heated space to work in. We have had several below zero temperatures and even some -30 wind chills. Oh my goodness! It is just too cold!

IMG_3957

It is amazing how quiet everything is too.  The snow seems to silence all the noise.

IMG_3999

Paths and garden beds that were so well used just a few months ago, sit idle, waiting on their due season to be active again.

IMG_4012

All the animals are quiet too.

IMG_3965

Even the goats are quiet. They quietly eat their hay and drink water all day long.

IMG_3969

Our chickens who normally run free all over the homestead, wont even come out of their chicken house.  They have a chicken size door on their house that is open all the time, and a small fence that is open all the time so they can run free. But they won’t come out in the snow. They are huddled inside, hiding out until warmer days.

IMG_3966

I know how they feel.
I’m huddled inside too, waiting…
I’m waiting for sunshine…waiting for warmer days.

What is this winter like at your home?
Thanks for your comments.
Be blessed!
