How We Used Thin Stix:

I was thrilled to be given another wonderful opportunity to review Thin Stix with my kids!  We love using Thin Stix in our home ever since we reviewed Thin Stix 6 Pack of Classic Colors earlier this year.

This kit is so much more!  It has the bold 6 classic colors plus + more classic colors for a total of 12.  Then it has 6 Neon colors plus 6 Metallix colors too, for a total of 24 vibrant colors of tempera paint sticks.  The Metallix colors are really speacial because they have a sparkle effect that reflects the light.

Thin Stix are easy to use and hold on to that even my youngest kids can do art projects easily.  It is as simple as taking off the cap and using them.  If you need a little more paint, then you simply twist the bottom of the stick like a tube of chapstick.  The paint comes up at the other end and you are ready to simply draw with them again.  They are mess free and ready to paint with.  There is no need for water and no clean up.  I am always looking for projects my kids can do that are simple, and I especially like MESS FREE arts and crafts!  Check out this short video that shows how mess free they really are:

Projects With Thin Stix Creativity Pack:

Here are a few of projects we have made with our Thin Stix Creativity Pack over the past few weeks.  I am sure we will have many more great projects using these paints in our arts and crafts and school work this year.  I have shared a few pictures below and I will link the stories about how we made these projects and what materials we used as I get them posted.

  • Art Class Fall Season Painting (Multimedia Art Books)
  • Art Class Wooden Creations (Popsicle Stick)
  • Organizer Container Art (Recycled Milk Jugs)
  • Organizer Container Art  (Recycled Shampoo Bottles)
  • Lunch Box Art  (Recycled Milk Jugs)
  • Candle Flower Art   (Recycled Milk Jugs)
  • Butterfly Art & Science (Recycled Milk Jugs)
  • Bird House Art & Science (Recycled Milk Jugs)
  • Bird Feeder Art (Recycled Milk Jugs)
  • Birthday Cards (Construction Paper)
  • Get Well Cards (Construction Paper)

Art Class Fall Season Painting

(Thin Stix & Multimedia Art Books)

We took a walk and looked at trees and gathered a few fall leaves for inspiration and to inspect the colors of fall more closely.

The kids found similar colors in the Thin Stix and used their own creativity to paint a fall scene.

Organizer Container Art

(Thin Stix & Recycled Milk Jugs)

These are so cute!  You can use them for just about anything you need to organize.  Kids could use them for their Thin Stix and art supplies, Legos, crayons, etc.  You could use them in your drawers to hold socks or miscellaneous items.  You could use them to hold fruit (or candy) on the counter. It could hold napkins on the table as a cute centerpiece too.

My son loved personalizing his organizer!

Organizer Container Art

(Thin Stix & Recycled Shampoo Bottles)

These containers are so cute and just the right size.  They are so simple to make.  They are small enough to fit into a backpack or purse. They can hold a variety of things from art supplies, small journal, cell phone, camera, first aide, small sowing kit, to snacks, etc.  They will make great gifts to give away too.

Lunch Box Art

(Thin Stix & Recycled Milk Jugs)

I can’t wait to share the finished product of this project.  Stay tuned for another story.  This was so easy to make and personalize using our Thin Stix.  It can fit easily into a backpack or purse and hold a huge variety of of foods from sandwiches, juice boxes, granola bars, crackers, fruit, bags of veggies, fruit cups, yogurt, etc.

The lunch boxes are not water tight, but they will prevent your foods from getting smashed in your bag or backpack.  It has a lid and is large enough to keep several loose items altogether, so it is easy to pull it out and have everything inside the lunch box without searching for something that got misplaced.  These containers are special because you made them yourself.  You can also use this to organize various non-food items too.

Butterfly Art & Science

(Thin Stix & Recycled Milk Jugs)

The kids had a lot of fun learning about butterflies and making their own creations.

Candle Flower Art

(Thin Stix & Recycled Milk Jugs) The kids had a lot of fun cutting out their petals, painting them with Thin Stix colors like Metalix Purple and Classic Purple, and hot glueing the petals together to create lovely flowers.

Then they attached a small tea candle in the center of the flower.

These lovely candle holders will look very pretty on our table, and we made some to give away too.

If you want a safer version without a flame, then instead of using real candles, use battery operated candles.  They will look just as beautiful.

Birthday Cards Fall Theme

(Thin Stix & Paper & Construction Paper)

Get Well Cards

(Thin Stix & Paper & Construction Paper)

Projects With Thin Stix 6 Pk Classic Colors:

Here are a few projects we made using the Thin Stix 6 Pack of Classic Colors of tempera paints.  Some of these have additional stories about making those projects and to read them, just click on the link.

Art Class Paint Project

(Thin Stix & Multimedia Art Book)

DIY Portable Art Kits

(Thin Stix Tempera Paints Various Colors, Colored Pencils, Charcoal Pencils, Pencil Sharpener, Gel Pens, Water Colors, Multimedia Art Book, Sketch Pad, Recycled Zippered Container)

Father’s Day Cards

(Thin Stix, File Folder, Bible Verse)

Garden Pots

(Thin Stix & Flower Pots)

I am also amazed how durable these paints are.  I painted these pots with Thin Stix 6 Pack of Classic Colors several months ago.  Even after the rains and later the scorching heat on the back deck all summer, the bugs and flowers we painted my pots have endured and still look great!

Final Thoughts:

I really like the fact these tempera paints (Kwik Stix and Thin Stix) are mess free. I also like the fact they have so many applications, they are portable so you can take them with you, and you can use them to personalize your space, beyond just using them on a piece of paper.

Boost Your Health With Essential Oils & Giveaway

There are many simple tasks we can implement to boost our health year around. During the cold and flu season it is especially important to pay attention to the choices we are making and intentionally strengthen our immune system.

Even the most basic changes in our daily habits of how we sleep, drink, eat, move, use essential oils, detox, and use superfood supplements can be life changing.  If you find yourself frequently fighting infections, and feeling “under the weather”, daily use of essential oils combined with these simple steps can boost your immune system.

Essential Oils To Boost Your Health:

Essential oils by doTerra can be an easy and affordable component in building a balanced immune system and keeping it working strong. As a matter of fact, essential oils can be a human’s best friend in nearly every area of life 24 hours a day. They can be used in self-care, whole family care (from birth to old age), pet care, home care, education, gardening, farming, therapy, disease protocol.  Even if you choose not to use them 24/7, then at least use them in your immune system tool kit.

My Essential Oil Tool Chest. I still have room to add more oils. An essential oil tool chest is a "must have" in every home.

My Essential Oil Tool Chest. I still have room to add more. An essential oil tool chest is a “must have” in every home.

Specific oils can be weapons of mass destruction and shields of protection against nearly everything that comes against the human immune system, and many have already been scientifically proven to be more effective than most pharmaceuticals on the market today. When your body goes into the repair shop, it could use a few specific tools. Essential oils are the tools that can assist you in boosting your immune system.

It is so easy to forget how important sleep is for protecting our immune system. Since we do it everyday, most of us just take it for granted. For example it is best to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep and to go to bed by 10:30 to get a good nights rest and reach REM sleep in which the brain puts the body into a detoxing and repair mode. Your body literally goes to your own built-in repair shop when you go into REM sleep. If we don’t reach this restful state of sleep, the body gets behind in its repairing process. To help you get to sleep at this healthy hour, be sure to put away anything with a lit screen (TV, Smartphone, Computer, Bright lighted room) at least one hour before bedtime. Instead of TV or computer time, read in soft light, or listen to relaxing music, or even take a relaxing bath to get your body and mind ready to go to bed. Essential oils can assist you in relaxing and getting a good nights sleep. Some can be applied to the feet or massaged into the muscles, neck, etc. Also use a diffuser in the room and use calming oils for you and your children to help you relax and sleep well.

Diffuse essential oils in your home.

Another wise choice to boost your immune system, is to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated throughout the day. All of the body systems need water to run efficiently. When we get dehydrated the body suffers and our immune system is weakened. I recently read that many folks who survived the Ebola infection were the ones who were able to stay hydrated and drink at least 100 oz or more of water. That volume of clean water in their location is hard to come by per person each day, and many are loosing their battle with Ebola because their immune system is weakened. When we are hydrated our immune system can function at its best to protect us.

Add specific essential oils that can be injested to drinking water to boost the body's health.

To boost our immune system there are specific oils that are safe for internal use that we can add to our drinking water that help to kill infections from virus and bacteria and mobilize our defense system. It’s like bringing in the Calvary to the battle.

Eating right, getting plenty of rest, moderate activity, and staying hydrated are the basic foundation of a healthy life. Eating right involves eating a variety of nutrient dense foods and avoiding “Franken foods” (man-made foods that have been seriously altered from their natural state or ingredients that were never food in the first place).

Some of the foundational foods we should include in our diet are:
1) Fresh organic fruits and vegetables that provides live enzymes, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, carbohydrates, fiber, and more.
2) Bone broths that provide dissolved and easily assimilated minerals,
3) Healthy fats like cold pressed coconut oil, cold pressed olive oil, grass-fed butter, free range eggs, fresh raw milk with cream, sprouted nuts, etc.
4) Cultured foods like yogurt, sour cream, raw cheese; also fermented foods like pickles, chutney, kimchi, and kraut; and fermented beverages like coconut water kefirs, dairy kefirs, new wines, kombucha, etc. Cultured and fermented foods provide so many amazing nutrients that are ready to digest for easily assimilated vitamins, live probiotics to aid digestion of our other foods, and the healing and protective strategy they provide the digestive tract.
5) Herbs, spices, and essential oils for flavor and their protective qualities.
6) In moderation, animal proteins from Grass-fed and wild caught animals, such as wild salmon, wild deer, or grass-fed beef. It is very important that these animals eat as natural as they would in the wild. This is the best way to ensure the nutrition for them and for you is at the right level and not out of whack. If you don’t have access to this kind of meat, it is better to go without than to try to use factory farmed animal proteins that result in disease for the animals and the humans that consume them.

Beyond these basic areas, not much else is needed for food for the human body’s nutrient needs. A few other enjoyable foods that still contain intensive nutrients are fine in moderation too such as: raw honey, maple syrup, un-sulfered molasses, succanant or rapadura sugar, lohan fruit sugar, coconut sugar, sprouted organic or chemical free grains, sprouted organic legumes, etc. but don’t over eat these as they can raise the blood sugar level, upset the digestive system, etc.

Specific essential oils that are safe for ingesting can be used as remedies but also used to flavor food, wash food, enhance digestion, enhance metabolism, used in home remedies, and to boost the immune system. Many essential oils are anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal. So you get the combined benefit of making your food taste great, and boosting the immune system at the same time.

Avoid eating white sugar, and white flour, and grain alcohol. This is another simple task we can do to stay healthy. White grains and sugars are basically sugar in the blood stream and hard on the body organs. They can weaken the digestive system, neurological system, endocrine system, and the immune system. We are talking about the immune system specifically in this post so it is important for you to know that white sugar interferes with the white blood cell’s ability to fight infections. White sugar is really dangerous to the immune system because it literally immobilizes and weakens the fighter cells to less than 25% of their fighting capability for several hours after consuming white sugar. It stops the conversion of vit. D to vit C and also blocks receptor sites and blocks the white blood cells from accessing the vitamin C and vitamin A rendering them useless in an attack. That is why we get sick so easily when we consume a high sugar diet. Sugar has a long half-life in the blood stream and the white blood cells do not return to their full fighting capacity for several hours, and for some people it can take a day or two to get it their immune system back up to normal, even when we have consumed as little as a few teaspoons of sugar. This is why the Standard American Diet can be so dangerous. Imagine if you consumed this small amount of sugar everyday, which most Americans consume way more. Your immune system would be vulnerable to all kinds of attacks on a constant basis and would not have the ability to efficiently protect you. Adding in anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal essential oils helps a person have more of a chance to fight infections when perhaps their diet isn’t the best.

For various reasons, the human body may lack certain needed nutrients to function at its optimal capacity. It could be due to dietary choices we make, but it could also be due to illness, medications, stress, toxins, disease, etc. all of which can have long-term negative effects on the body and suppress its functioning.

doTerra supplements

One way to improve your nutritional intake and jump-start the healing process is to use superfoods and superfood supplements. Superfoods are a concentrated form of all natural nutrients. These are nutrients that naturally exist in nature, and we when eat them in a concentrated form, they can provide the tools we need to repair and renew our bodies. Supperfoods come in various ways, such as liquid, or dried and ground into powder, perhaps the liquids or powders are added to capsules, or left as a powder or liquid to stir into drinks or smoothies.  Some superfoods are made into extracts and oils too.  Some examples of superfood supplements are probiotics like PBAssist +, xEO Mega Essential Oil Complex, Alpha CRS +, MICROPLEX VMz,  TerraGreens, Terrazyme multi enzymes, and more great superfoods like Spirulina, food Extracts like elderberry extract, Herbal Extracts, Spirulina, Fish Oils which provides Omega 3 Fatty Acids, cinnamon oil, oregano oil, and so on.

Toxins seem to be something we don’t think much about, but our bodies encounter them daily. The effects of toxins on the body can build up over a short or long amount of time, and be detrimental, leading to a compromised immune system and disease.

Toxins are everywhere including in the air we breath, water, food, soil, personal care products and cleaning products in our homes, where we live and play, and in our workplaces too. It is a wise decision on our part to reduce as much exposure to toxins in our daily life as we can.

I love diffusing my doTerra essential oils!

I love diffusing my doTerra essential oils!

Essential oils can play a major role in helping the body detox. Helping our body detox from environmental, digestive, and immune system toxins is a great way to boost and protect our immune system. Some oils detox the air and help us breath fresher cleaner air, some oils detox our bodies through both internal and external use. Soon I will post more information on specific oils we can use to detox our bodies and boost our immune system. Be sure to check back for more posts about essential oils.

Decide To Drive

Distracted Driving

How often have you driven on auto pilot, just going through the familiar motions, but your brain is somewhere else?

I can’t count the times this has happened to me.  When I was first learning to drive I took a driver’s ed course in high school.  One thing that I have always remembered from that class was “you must drive defensively at all times, always be on your guard, keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road, and never allow yourself to get distracted.”

Though I remembered those words all these years, there have been times I failed to maintain them in my daily driving activities.  There have been distractions, and different kinds of distractions at different stages of my life.

For example, in highschool in the 1980’s, all my friends would pile into the vehicle and laugh, talk, and change the songs on the radio as we were driving around “cruising”, and it was hard to focus on driving when all that excitement was going on.  Thank God we did not have cell phones to be distracted with back then!

In college, I used to drive two hours to travel back home on the weekends.  I was really tired after a long week of classes, studying for exams, and working.  It was hard to focus on the road and stay awake sometimes.  I would stop at the quick store and get a bag of crunchy chips hoping that munching on chips and driving with my window rolled down would keep me awake. Even driving on the road just two hours in the dark when you are tired is definitely not a good idea. Though I always made it home safely, driving sleepy is a distraction that could have a very bad outcome.  I would encourage college students today to change their plans, stay at school if they are tired, go to bed and get a good night’s sleep before heading out in the morning to head back home, or anywhere they need to go that is more than a 20 to 30 minute drive away. It is just not worth risking your life, or the lives of other drivers on the road, because you are tired.
A lot of time has passed since I was in highschool and college, and technology (automobiles, cell phones, smart phones, GPS, portable movie players, etc), and driving laws have changed a little.  I now use a cell phone in my everyday life, and have answered and talked on the phone when I was driving. Though I don’t call out while driving, if others call in, I have answered the call.   I do not text while driving.  That is a risk I am not willing to take.  I definitely see how cell phones, both calling and texting, can be a distraction and why it is so important to stay focussed on what is happening on the road instead of what is happening on the phone.

I am also in the stage of my life of having a vehicle full of young children.  I have six kids and that can be a whole lot of distraction at times when driving.  It is hard for that many kids, of various ages and levels of maturity, to understand to be quiet when in the vehicle.  For one reason or another, they always seem to need or want something, at all times.  Someone is always talking, singing, or fussing.  The only time they are truly quiet in the vehicle is when they are asleep.  Young kids have lots of needs: there are diapers to change, puke to clean up, stops for bathrooms, stops to nurse a crying baby, hungry, thirsty, and more.  I have had to really concentrate when I am in traffic when the kids have a question, or someone is having a disagreement with their sibling. I find concentrating at those times the hardest when I am pulling out onto a road, or coming to a stop and deciding which lane to be in if I have to make a turn to the left or right.  Something about having so many people talking to you at once makes those decisions even more difficult.

About two years ago, the kids and I were getting ready to leave the house to attend a 4H program that I teach.  We got the van loaded with all of our supplies, and got the kids fastened into their seat belts.  Just as I started the ignition, suddenly an argument broke out between the two boys in the back seat, and then the baby behind my seat started crying.  I was so distracted by all of the commotion that instead of putting the van into drive, I put it into reverse and hit my husband’s parked truck.  The impact dented his bumper, and dented my bumper.  There were no other damages or injuries. But there I was, in tears because I had been so distracted by what is going on with the kids right in my own driveway, and the end result was not a good one. Thank God that didn’t happen out on the road somewhere.

Even though we have a big family both my husband and I have tried to be very alert and pay attention to the road and other drivers at all times. But watching this video about parents and kids on the road really drives the point home of how much of a challenge it can be to decide to drive and not get distracted when you have children with you.

So why am I talking about driving distracted?
Because there is a new Decide To Drive program sponsored by the American Auto Alliance and American Academy of Orthapedic Surgeons.  They have asked me to help spread the word about the dangers of driving distracted.

Decide To Drive:
(quoted from the Decide To Drive web site)
“The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Auto Alliance want to increase awareness about the risks of distracted driving.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), of the nearly 33,000 roadway fatalities in 2012, there were 3,328 fatalities and approximately 421,000 injuries in distracted driving-related crashes.  Orthopaedic surgeons—the specialists who put bones and limbs back together after road crashes and traumas—along with our partners, the automakers, would rather help all drivers “decide to drive” each time they get in the car and to keep bones and limbs intact.

The Decide to Drive program aims to empower drivers and passengers to speak up about distracted driving, continue the conversation at home, work and play, and reduce distracted behaviors behind the wheel. Remember, the most advanced safety feature of any vehicle is the driver. The AAOS and the Auto Alliance urges all drivers to keep their most sophisticated safety features engaged at all times: eyes on the road and hands on the wheel”.

Be sure to follow social media links and keep up with all the latest information:
The Decide to Drive program is hosting a Catchphrase Contest they can use on bumper stickers.  Be sure to check it out and share your ideas.  Top prize is a $1,000 Visa gift card, and also two additional phrases will be chosen and receive a $500 Visa gift card.
Turns out my Driver’s Ed instructor was right.  YOU are the only one on the road who knows what YOU are going to do while driving.  Decide to drive defensively and without distractions.  Minimize the opportunities for distractions to happen.  Keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel and most of all stay safe.

Have you ever been a distracted driver?

Meijer Fall Fashions

I am so thankful to live near a Meijer store.

Meijer at Richmond, IN

Meijer has just about everything I need for my family of 8 people, and I really do enjoy shopping at Meijer.   I love the variety that is offered, especially the fresh produce and meat.  Their produce and meat is so much better quality than most of the other stores in the area where we live.  I also like the variety of clothes Meijer has for all ages and sizes.  We are able to buy most of what our family needs there and I prefer shopping at Meijer over other stores.

We have just entered the Fall season. The morning and evening air has been cool and crisp, while the afternoons have still seen some warm temperatures.  But I know those Indiana chilly Fall temperatures are just around the corner.  Fall just brings to mind leaves changing colors and falling from the trees, cool nights watching football from the stands, parties and get togethers, jackets, warm soup, cinnamon rolls, Thanksgiving holiday, and lots and lots of bold colors.

I was so excited to be chosen as a sponsored reviewer of Meijer’s Fall Fashions.  Meijer sent me a $50 gift card to shop Meijer Style for Fall.  So I headed down to my local Meijer store to check out some great fall style for my Fall wardrobe.

Meijer Style is promoting their Fall Fashions line and running a Fall Fashions Sweepstakes and Pinterest Contest.  The prize is a $100 gift certificate.  The sweepstakes is open to everyone so be sure to get your entry in before the deadline of 9/29/2013.

My Fall Fashions Shopping Adventure:

First of all, I want to say that the store associates really can make or break a shopping experience.  I had the privilege of meeting these wonderful sales associates and store representatives today.

        Cathy: Door Greeter
        Carrie: Fashion Associate
        Pamela: Fashion Associate
        Jared: Cashier
Caitlin: Cashier Manager / Customer Service

Meijer is running a great Fall Sale this week.  They have a buy one get one at 50% off sale going on for many of their Fall clothing.

There were so many great items on sale too like Umbrellas, Jackets, Gloves, Scarves, etc.  I wished I could have gotten one of everything!  I headed straight for the Women’s Clothing and Accessories departments to fill my needs for today.

I liked all of these shoes.  The Fall boots were really neat with the metal square studs and black leather.  I loved the sketcher walking shoes too. My daughter picked out these very pretty sandals for me to wear with a dressy outfit.

She loves trying on shoes.  She tried on lots of fall clothes too, including some of the clothes I was also trying on.  She is so funny.

The kids helped me SHOP!  They put some of everything into my shopping cart for me to try on.

There were so many great Fall things to try on.

Here are a few of my favorite things from the Fall outfits I tried on today.   From these pictures below, I my favorites are the shirt and jacket with blue jeans on the top right, and the pink and black outfit in the lower left corner.

Next we headed over to the jewelry department.  We found
some beautiful watches, necklaces, and bracelets.  It was really hard to decide which accessory would really make our Fall style even better.

Decisions, decisions, decisions!  I ended up choosing a wonderful black jeweled necklace, the jewels are the shape of triangles, mounted on a silver looking chain.  I also chose a black beaded bracelet.  Then I chose this black leather purse with buckles. Over by the purses, I hung my outfit up so I could see what accessories and purse looked the best.  These accessories will go with clothes I have at home, in addition to this wonderful Fall outfit.

Thank you Meijer for the gift certificate to participate in this Fall Fashion shopping experience.  My kids and I had a lot of fun shopping and looking through the Richmond  Meijer store.  We met some great people who work at Meijer and serve our community.  We had the opportunity to see what is currently in style for the Fall season.  We had a great time.

I am tickled!  I am thrilled!  I am thankful!
I am so excited to wear this new Fall Fashion from Meijer!
