We recently received a copy of Mathematical Reasoning Level F from The Critical Thinking Company. Level F is designed as a core curriculum math book for 5th grade.
I really like this book. It is big and has 439 pages. That might scare you away when thinking MATH, but don't let the size fool you.
It is bold and bright and each full color page is fun to read and easy to look at.
Level F (grade 5) covers several areas in a fun and inviting way:
Number and Operations
Data Analysis and Probability
This book is not like typical math books that are boring and rote. Nope! This math book has just the right amount of problems to a page, sometimes only three...sometimes a lot more... but it does not feel overwhelming. They also use everyday kinds of problems that really helps kids relate to using math in their daily life. Click the link here to see several sample pages.
Description of Mathematical Reasoning Level F from their website:
Mathematical Reasoning™ helps students devise strategies to solve a wide variety of math problems. This book emphasizes problem-solving and computation to build the math reasoning skills necessary for success in higher-level math and math assessments. This book is written to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The Level F book is a complete curriculum for the fifth grade level.
These highly effective activities take students far beyond drill-and-practice by using step-by-step, discussion-based problem-solving to develop a conceptual bridge between computation and the reasoning required for upper-level math. Activities and units spiral slowly, allowing students to become comfortable with concepts but also challenging them to continue building their math skills.
Mathematical Reasoning™ prepares students to achieve top scores on assessment tests, including

My fifth grade son really liked this book. He enjoyed the variety of challenges. It was not repetitive. I am glad to share his opinion with you: "I like it, its fun" he says.
In addition to wonderful daily life applications of this book, it has a complete answer key to help the teacher / parent. I think this would be a nice core or daily practice math curriculum.
